The student must be able to demonstrate the belt level curriculum with skill and confidence. How quickly each student accomplishes that is largely up to the individual student. In my admittedly limited experience, 3 months is an attainable goal for a dedicated student.
However, it is also the responsibility of the instructors to teach, and to encourage the students to progress. If a student is not ready in, say, July, then there is always the October testing. And again, some people advance more rapidly than others. In Judo, once again we have to meet a set number of requirements and present those requirements confidently in order to advance. I started Judo in 1997, and ten years later (with time off to have three children) I am STILL a white belt. Both my judo sensei and my Ju Jutsu shihan tell me I have some of the best, most fluid throws they have ever seen, almost Dan level. But... I am awful at the matwork, the grappling aspect, and without that I cannot advance from white belt, nor would I want a concession because I've been at it this long. I haven't earned it.
In traditional Tae Kwon Do, there are 10 color ranks starting at white belt. Unfortunately, there are %26quot;McDojangs%26quot; or belt factories where students test every three months, regardless of whether they are ready to progress or not. These kind of schools give reputable TKD academies a bad name. In true TKD, one does not advance in rank until they have met the requirements for rank and can demonstrate them with confidence and without being prompted by an instructor. Schools that hand out rank every three months are only in it for one thing: profit. We have a school like that here, and whenever one of their high ranks transfers to us, they are invariably actually a white belt because they cannot even meet the most basic of our white belt requirements.
So, for TKD as well, there is not set time frame for testing. Our students need to know certain Korean terms and dojang commands, proper stances, proper seated positions, six hand strikes, six blocks, four kicks, one form, five one steps, five choke escapes, one pressure point, and, if they are children, have to complete one responsibility assignment (chores for a month at home) and have a letter of recommendation from their schoolteacher in order to test from white belt to white with yellow belt. It is completely individual. Some students may take three months and be ready. We spoke with one student this evening who is now in his 14th month of training and is still a white belt.
What it comes down to in any art (excluding the belt factories) is that you get out of your art what you put into it. If you go to one class per week, don't bother to practice while you're away, and then return to class the following week without having so much as practiced a stance, you are going to stay a white belt for a long time. If you come to two or more classes per week, practice for at least a half hour per day at home, and visualize your techniques when you cannot physically do them, you will advance far more quickly.
Don't forget also that each martial art tends to have its own belt rank system. At our TKD school, we follow the guidelines set by the Kukkiwon, TKD world headquarters: only white, yellow, green, blue, red, and black belt. My Hap Ki Do instructor's belt system goes from white to orange low, orange high, green, blue, green low, green high, blue, brown low, brown high, black. In Ju Jutsu, our ranks for from white to yellow to orange to green low to green high to brown low to brown intermediate to brown high to black. I cannot seem to slip on the new auger belt for the Craftsman C950-52919-0 9 hp 27 inch snowblower. The idler assembly (pulley) seems to be in the way. I can shift the pulley slightly but the assembly is too close to the impeller pulley. A sharp push on both should open it like it is on a hinge. It's hard to explain but it works. When you have the belt on %26amp; have put the machine back together you need to tighten the top belt guide %26amp; the idler pulley. Have a 15 year old white/westinghouse spacesaver machine. got the front cover and have access to everything. There will also be an arrow telling which way you'll need to twist the tensioner to remove and install the belt, it is a fairly simple process.

The Echo doesn't have a belt tensioner, you simply pivot the alternator to tighten the belt.

Hold a short portion with your right hand, and direct the belt to the left. Wrap all the way around the body twice and you should have a short end directed to the left. Take that short end going to the left and wrap in under the double layer of belts (to circle or wrap the belt together in the front) Wrap it from the bottom (with your right hand you should be curling towards the body with your fingers)
so now you should have two ends and the belt should be wrapped together tightly in the front.
Now take the half in your right hand and do a little flip to flip it over. Take the half in your left hand and put it ontop of the one you just flipped and loop it under. (so if your right hand is palm down, your left hand would be palm down on top of y our right hand, curl your left fingers and that would be the direction that the belt would need to go) pull it through, then pull it out straight to the left and right and tighten.

I have to give you some food for thought on your child's belt. I know as a mother you want to help your child as much as possible. If you begin to tie his belt for him you will NOT be helping, you will actually be hurting him. My reasoning is this; if you tie it for him it delays his learning process. The belt is a sacred thing in my system; it represents your identity in the school. The art of handling the belt includes the method of tying it. It is a meaningful process.
The school should be teaching him how to tie it just as they should be teaching him other aspects of the martial arts.
Furthermore, if someone has not volunteered to help your child then part of the process is that your son must be humble enough to ask someone for help. This is another part of the art.
It will teach your son the following concepts, humility, respect, independence and this will, all lead to self-confidence.
However, if the school is not teaching these sorts of things you may want to question the caliber of his training.
I am not saying you shouldn't help him, I am just saying that doing it for him is not helping him. It is enabling him more than anything. After all, what happens on that fateful day when he gets in a fight? You will not be there to block a punch for him; he will be by himself with only his training to rely on. If his training is below par he will be in trouble. I mean no disrespect mostly I am concerned about young people's well being and people paying too much for unaffective training.
On a side note, I see many younger students at other school gleefully running around in there martial art belts. I see them at the mall, on the streets, leaving the school like this.

it's difficult to explain how to tie a belt. But let me try :)
From behind (to show your kid how to tie it),
Hold a short portion with your right hand, and direct the belt to the left. Wrap all the way around the body twice and you should have a short end directed to the left. Take that short end going to the left and wrap in under the double layer of belts (to circle or wrap the belt together in the front) Wrap it from the bottom (with your right hand you should be curling towards the body with your fingers)
so now you should have two ends and the belt should be wrapped together tightly in the front.
Now take the half in your right hand and do a little flip to flip it over. Take the half in your left hand and put it ontop of the one you just flipped and loop it under. (so if your right hand is palm down, your left hand would be palm down on top of y our right hand, curl your left fingers and that would be the direction that the belt would need to go) pull it through, then pull it out straight to the left and right and tighten.

I have to give you some food for thought on your child's belt. I know as a mother you want to help your child as much as possible. If you begin to tie his belt for him you will NOT be helping, you will actually be hurting him. My reasoning is this; if you tie it for him it delays his learning process. The belt is a sacred thing in my system; it represents your identity in the school. The art of handling the belt includes the method of tying it. It is a meaningful process.
The school should be teaching him how to tie it just as they should be teaching him other aspects of the martial arts.
Furthermore, if someone has not volunteered to help your child then part of the process is that your son must be humble enough to ask someone for help. This is another part of the art.
It will teach your son the following concepts, humility, respect, independence and this will, all lead to self-confidence.
However, if the school is not teaching these sorts of things you may want to question the caliber of his training.
I am not saying you shouldn't help him, I am just saying that doing it for him is not helping him. It is enabling him more than anything. After all, what happens on that fateful day when he gets in a fight? You will not be there to block a punch for him; he will be by himself with only his training to rely on. If his training is below par he will be in trouble. I mean no disrespect mostly I am concerned about young people's well being and people paying too much for unaffective training.
On a side note, I see many younger students at other school gleefully running around in there martial art belts. I see them at the mall, on the streets, leaving the school like this.

How do I stop the squeaking of a belt on my car?
I have a car that we changed the water pump and alternator/air conditioning belt on. Now when I crank it it goes thump thump thump like its going to stop running at first. If I give it gas it sounds fine except the belt starts squeaking. After a few seconds it acts fine. It only does this when its first cranked and if its been itting for more than about 10 minutes since it was last cranked. When the water pump was changed it was very hard to get to. This car has a two-belt system. One only drives the power steering fluid pump and is the one I am trying to replace. I have a Honda Accord 93 LX 2.2 4DR and one of the visible rubbery belts (not timing) adjacent to the engine is starting to crack. The Fan Belt aka Drive Belt aka Serpentine belt can be changed easily. First, find a new belt at an auto parts store... Canadian Tire or Auto Parts Source or UAP etc...
Next, with pleanty of light and perhaps a mirror on a stick examine the belt path of your engine. Draw it so you won't make a mistake, there is usually a drawing in the engine compartment, but it might not be correct, verify it first.
Next, find the belt tensioner, it's a pully usually just a plain flat wheel that rides the flat part of the belt (not the ribbed side). It will have a bolt in the centre of the pully, typically you turn this bolt clock wise (tightening) to cause the pully to swing on it's spring arm to release the tension on the belt. Find a good ratchet or S-Wrench (if you are tight on space) to turn that bolt. Pull the bolt, don't force if it doesn't move. If you have to pull more than say lifting a 2 year old kid then STOP and get help from someone that knows your Honda engine. Otherwise, while releasing the full tension of the belt, remove the old belt from any of the top pulleys (easy to reach). Release the wrench slowly, don't get hurt. Remove the belt completely. Replace with new one around all the same pulleys. Leave the top pulley for last. Once everything looks in place, pull the wrench again to do the last (top) pulley.

I have a 2000 v6 ford mustang (two door). The passenger side seat belt is spring loaded. You reach behind you and pull it out to buckle up, then it retracts through a hole in the interior car. It is completely stuck now. When my boy friend tries to pull the belt across his chest it wont give. He is not able pull it out enough to buckle it. It has no spring back and it wont come out of the hole. We have tried feeding the belt back in to the hole and tugging it to release the locking mechanism with out success. I have the CB3000 which is the model that was made after the Curve.
When I first started wearing it, i could only keep it on for two days or so, but now after 2 years of having it, I can keep mine on for about 2 weeks.
Since it's plastic, you dont have to worry about tetanus (spelling?) or things like that. You can wash it as you shower, thats what the holes and slots are for.
