How difficult is it to replace timing belt?

I have a 1998 Nissan Frontier and I need to change the timing belt. How difficult is it. Took it to a shop and they want to charge $1280 for replacing it.How difficult is it to replace timing belt? You can find a better deal than that. I have seen ads for local shops and oil change spots that do timeing belts for $280 to $300.How difficult is it to replace timing belt?1200....thats expensiveHow difficult is it to replace timing belt?Unless you are an engineer or a mechanic or an experienced amateur I would be wary of attempting this job. Get the timing wrong and you will wreck the engine when you start it up. You also need a good set of tools including a torque wrench.

If you do simple jobs already and have the tools, why not get hold of a repair instruction manual for your vehicle.

If you know your way round an engine and stick to the instructions, you should be able to do it.

One last thing. If you do attempt it when you are done turn the engine with a socket on the crankshaft nut, by hand. If it goes clunk while turning. Do NOT attempt to start it till you re time it.How difficult is it to replace timing belt?Your vehicle should have what is called a timing chain not a belt, it consists of a simple chain and tensioner assembly, the cost of replacement can range from $800-$1250 at a shop and should include the following parts.

Parts: Timing cover gasket, valve cover gasket, and the timing chain kit. These parts should run approx $133-$278

The labor is the expensive side of the job, it ranges from $764-$974.

If you are a hands on individual and are looking for a great resource for DIY auto repair check out autozone.com they have a very respectable DIY repair section that will at the least show you what it would take to accomplish this task on your own.

Hope this helps. How difficult is it to replace timing belt?People - a TIMING BELT is a lot more labor-intensive to replace than a serpentine or fan belt (Ruins). It often requires special tools to remove the harmonic balancer. $1280 may indeed be a fair price. How difficult is it to replace timing belt?yea 1 thousand dollars is way too much just for changing the belt. Ask at different shops how much they charge, ask some friends if they know of a shop they have been to...Those people are trying to rip you off...when one changes the belt they have to remove a part that the belt is on then remove it and put the new belt in the same way the other one was with the ridges on the inside and tighten it or it will make a screeching sound. -the belt dressing is optionalHow difficult is it to replace timing belt?$1280?!?! At the lube shop I worked at, we changed those and only charged about $80 at most, depending on which belt it needed. I suggest trying one of those. They can be kinda tricky, but most have a label showing you how it should look. I recommend getting someone that knows how to do it though.... If you mess it up..yikes.
