How do you change the serpintine belt on a 1998 oldsmobile cutlass ?

My belt broke the other day, and I need to replace it. I've never replaced one myself, and I don't want to spend the extra money to go to a mechanic to get it done. A diagram would be helpful too. Also, when it broke, power steering fluid spewed out, and left me without the use of power steering. Is this normal when a belt breaks while the engine is running ?How do you change the serpintine belt on a 1998 oldsmobile cutlass ?Under your hood there should be a diagram showing how the belt is routed around all of the pulleys. There will also be an arrow telling which way you'll need to twist the tensioner to remove and install the belt, it is a fairly simple process.

Loosen Tensioner

Remove belt

install new belt

Tighten tensioner

Be sure not to drive the car without the belt because you won't have power steering or the pump circulating water to cool the engine (resulting in overheating). The power steering fluid being spewed out is abnormal, you'll need to refill this because some cars use the pressurized steering fluid to assist the brake system. Your local auto parts store should also be more than happy to print out the diagram for how to install the belt.

Good Luck! How do you change the serpintine belt on a 1998 oldsmobile cutlass ?the diagram is in top of the radiator .

retreat the spring of the belt tensioner by holding the center bolt of the belt tensioner pulley and make pressure against the spring of the belt tensioner

that pulley is the last to hook to the belt
