How can I get my six year old to stop unbuckling his seat belt and climbing out of his booster seat?

I am wondering if there are any devices sold out there that can keep a child from unbuckling the seat belt. He is in a booster seat but it uses the shoulder and lap belt. It positions the belt over his shoulder at the proper height. He often takes his arm out or unbuckles the seat belt. Then he climbs out of his booster seat. Of course we pull over immediately, but I am wondering if there are any devices out there that make it harder or impossible for him to unbuckle? How can I get my six year old to stop unbuckling his seat belt and climbing out of his booster seat?Actually, there is such a device. It goes over the buckle on the stalk and you have to push it to unbuckle the seat belt.

However, a six year old might be able to manipulate it plus some consider it a safety issue--in case of an accident you might not be able to remove it quickly.

Ignore those dolts who think 6 year olds don't belong in a booster seat. They seem to care more about appearances than safety. How can I get my six year old to stop unbuckling his seat belt and climbing out of his booster seat? The thing that got my daughter to quit is telling her that if she is out of her seat, the police will take mommy to jail. it took a few times but be consistant. How can I get my six year old to stop unbuckling his seat belt and climbing out of his booster seat?I recommend busting his a*s with a belt and then explaining it hurts waaaaay less than getting into a car crash without a seat belt. How can I get my six year old to stop unbuckling his seat belt and climbing out of his booster seat?I dont know but my 2 year old does the same thing he is in a booster seat but if there is something like that i am pretty sure a six year old would be able to figure out how to get out of it.How can I get my six year old to stop unbuckling his seat belt and climbing out of his booster seat?Well we always tell the kids that the police will take them to jail if they arent in a seat because its the law. They stopped doing it.How can I get my six year old to stop unbuckling his seat belt and climbing out of his booster seat?whoop his asss and he will stop. You have to show him who is in charge. How can I get my six year old to stop unbuckling his seat belt and climbing out of his booster seat? You can explain that you could get in trouble and get taken away.. to jail but that would probably upset him so you could bring things like crayons and coloring books or healthy snacks that kids like like gold fish and keep him occupied. =]How can I get my six year old to stop unbuckling his seat belt and climbing out of his booster seat? When my gf children and mine were young, we had a rule. Very simple. You unbuckle your belt I get to hit you. They only unbuckled once. How can I get my six year old to stop unbuckling his seat belt and climbing out of his booster seat? How do you keep your son from doing other harmful things? Use the same punishment for this as for anything else he willfully does that he knows you don't want him to do. This is a safety issue. How do you keep him from running in the street, etc. It is the same thing. Establish boundaries. How can I get my six year old to stop unbuckling his seat belt and climbing out of his booster seat?Punish him severely when he does it. When he does it, pull over as soon as it is safe, get out of the car, and spank him hard and when you get home, ground him--it is absolutely unacceptable to get out of the seatbelt while in the car! He has to get the picture. How can I get my six year old to stop unbuckling his seat belt and climbing out of his booster seat?Kimberly and others who said it... I just have to say it's not smart to tell your child that the police will take you to jail. Do you want to make your child fear the police? Children should view the police as protectors and helpers, they should not be taught to fear them and you don't get put in jail for not wearing your seat belt. If you want to use the police at least be honest and say that the police want to keep people safeand seat belts keep them safe in the car and if people aren't wearing seat belts they will get a ticket and have to pay money because the police want them to be safe. Tell your child that you also want them to be safe and explain the dangers of riding in a car without a seatbelt.

you can also show your child this video of crash testing and what happens when you don't wear your belt. You can be thrown all over the car or even outside the car.

You need to have a set consequence for unbuckling the seat. Pulling over and making him buckle is good but then what? What is the consequence that you use to teach him not to do it anymore? There needs to be a negative consequence when he does it such as he loses TV for two days. Then you have to follow through!

I would also put into place a reward system. You can have a jar and marbles and every time you go somewhere and he stays buckled, he gets to put two marbles into the marble jar. You draw a %26quot;goal%26quot; line in the marble jar and when he has enough marbles to fill up to the goal line, he gets a reward for doing such a good job.

Using reward incentive and consequences for negative behavior in combination is your best bet in nipping this behavior. How can I get my six year old to stop unbuckling his seat belt and climbing out of his booster seat? No, its unsafe to have anything preventing unbuckling a seatbelt.

Your son is six!!! You should be disciplining him, not looking for ways to babyproof. He is way too old for that, and can understand rules and right from wrong. He needs to see that there will be major consequences if he unbuckles himself while you are driving. How can I get my six year old to stop unbuckling his seat belt and climbing out of his booster seat? You can try twisting the base of the seatbelt around backwards so that the button is facing down toward the seat rather than up and turn the part that clips into it around, too. This can make it harder to unbuckle the seatbelt, but probably not impossible for a six year old. (This trick used to work when my son was about 2-3 and had a habit of unbuckling the seatbelt).

Beyond that two suggestions:

1. Pull the car over safely ASAP, turn the engine off and tell the child %26quot;This car is not moving again until everyone is safely buckled up%26quot;. Then wait. Repeat as needed.

2. If you can do it safely (no other cars in area, etc.), when the child unbuckles and starts to get out of the seat, stop the car by hitting the brakes a bit hard. A sudden stop that throws him a bit off balance might just scare him a little bit into understanding that there is a reason for the seatbelt and booster seat. How can I get my six year old to stop unbuckling his seat belt and climbing out of his booster seat?Spank him next time he does it. Make sure you spank him hard so he knows you mean business. How can I get my six year old to stop unbuckling his seat belt and climbing out of his booster seat?what in gods' name is a 6 year old doing in a booster seat? How can I get my six year old to stop unbuckling his seat belt and climbing out of his booster seat?I'm not aware of any devices, sorry. Do you punish him whenever he unbuckles or do you just pull over and rebuckle him? Maybe a reward chart would help? If he stays buckled in his seat for 1-week he gets to go out for ice cream or something along those lines.

Edited to add: Like the above posters i always just tell my daughter that the cops will take her or me to jail if she unbuckles while the car is moving.
