How do I check if someone is really a black belt without knowing specifically where they trained?

Someone is claiming to be a black belt who can teach, but does not have a school...I want to check him out but not sure where he trained. How do I check if someone is really a black belt without knowing specifically where they trained?Gee, your question sounds like me at the moment. I don't currently have a commercial dojo. I prefer to teach privately now and hand pick who and when I teach. However, any real black belt should have rank certificates. Not just one for black belt, but he should be able to supply at least a few color belt certificates too. The problem here may, or may not be one that is easy to solve. If the person you are referring to has studied under a known martial arts organization, they will have records of any ranks he got through them. If he got his ranks from some small dojo then you may not be able to track down the source. As someone said certificates can and are forged. One possibility is to get someone that is knowledgeable about martial arts to give you their opinion. Still not the best way, but better than nothing.

I'm glad that you asked this question. There are many peopl taken in by so called qualified instructors. The general public does not know the difference between good training and a Mcdojo. If they did there would not be so many Mcdojo everywhere you look these days. How do I check if someone is really a black belt without knowing specifically where they trained?Well, to be honest, a %26quot;black belt%26quot; isn't very descriptive since there are generally 10 degrees of black belt (i.e. 10 dan ranks). A first degree black belt (shodan) is only really an advanced beginner; not really someone who is qualified to teach a class, but they can usually handle teaching beginners introductory techniques. You may ask him what level of black belt he has, and what he is doing to continue his own training (e.g. does he still train with a previous instructor a few times a year, etc.). This is important because an instructor without an instructor is basically like driving down a road with a dead end. Also, what style is he teaching/practicing? Karate, tae kwon do, etc? What is the name of the school (e.g. Goju Ryu Karatedo). Get him to spell it out, and then do some research to find out information about the style and where it came from.

I've had to uproot and move my school across country so I can sympathize with the difficulty in establishing a school in a new area. Does he plan on opening a school, or is he going to provide lessons out of his house (I know a number of legitimate instructors which teach out of their house, but that doesn't mean that this individual is legitimate)?

Anyway, if it is something your seriously considering, then be inquisitive. If you are paying money for something, or even just devoting your time, then that individual should be able to answer your questions satisfactorily. How do I check if someone is really a black belt without knowing specifically where they trained?Ask him for credentials, such as, where he trained, who was his instructor, what years did he train, so on and so forth. Proceed with caution if he is reluctant to give this info to you because there are lots of frauds out there. How do I check if someone is really a black belt without knowing specifically where they trained? He should either have a certificate (it can be difficult to verify though) - or he should be able to offer you contact information for the person who trained him. Like any resume, the references are the actually important part of it.How do I check if someone is really a black belt without knowing specifically where they trained?Ask him for his test certificates and ask him what type of application a punch is he should say it is a hard long attack. If you need more evidence ask him to show you how he would defend himself in a actaul confrontation. If he sinks in to a horse stance he is bluffing. How do I check if someone is really a black belt without knowing specifically where they trained?ask him easy as.

he will produce documents take down where he received them and research it.

watch his class does it look sloppy?

you will find that renting costs money maybe he is just getting started and hasnt rented out a place yet.How do I check if someone is really a black belt without knowing specifically where they trained?Ask for references and to see his registered black belt certificate as well as his license to teach. If they look home made, suspicious or are issued by some unheard of association just laugh and walk away.
