How do you tighten or replace a washing machine belt?

I think the Belt on our washing machine is messing up . It wont go into final spin unless you go and open the lid then shut it then it will kick in. I have been told you can tighten the belt And if not replace it. I think it should not be that hard to fix so I would like to do it myselfe.
