How do you take in pants that have belt loops?

My husband has lost weight and even with his belt tightened, his pants won't stay up. We bought him a few pair of smaller sized jeans, but I want to take in the waist 3-4 inches on a few older pair. I tried putting tucks in the waistband, but the spot I would normally put them has belt loops in the way. What do I do?How do you take in pants that have belt loops? The easiest way is to tighten them up in the back where the seam is, and that will also take out at least one belt loop.
