How do you know when a timing belt has gone?

My fan belt went recently on my old car. I've got that fixed, but now want to know this:- I was told that if the fanbelt goes, it's odds on that the timing belt is likely to go too. What's the timing belt, and how will I know if it's gone? How do you know when a timing belt has gone?Fiesta mark 4 dosent have a timing belt It has a timing chain they don't go. If you had a timing belt and it went your engine is finished. How do you know when a timing belt has gone? The timing belt keeps the internal parts of the engine moving in sequence so the engine works smoothly.

If it snaps, internal bits of engine will hit each other and break. You really don't want this to happen, as it's very expensive to repair.

Check the service schedule for your car to see after how many miles the timing belt should be replaced. It's often 60,000 miles or more, but can be less.

If a service schedule book didn't come with your car, a Haynes workshop manual for your car will also have the info. Get one on eBay or at Halfords.

You should get the timing belt done asap if the car has covered more miles than recommended, but there is no evidence in the car's service history that the belt has ever been replaced.

These are the factors in the decision. The fan belt's lifecycle doesn't come into it.How do you know when a timing belt has gone? There is no corelation between a fan belt life and the cambelt life.

If you are driving a car when one goes you will know. Likely big bang, engine will no longer run and your wallet will become lighter by several hundred pounds soon after.

If you do not know when the belt was last changed and the mileage is over the amount for the recommended change then you should get it done. many Fords are on a 100000 miles or 10 years, whatever comes first, so there is a good chance that yours is due.How do you know when a timing belt has gone? This is one of the pain in the backside repairs that naturally happens. It is something best to repair in advance based on miles. Okay, this is a belt that ties all the internal timing of things together. Most manufacturers have returned to timing chains-which rarely ever fail. The belt does about every 50-60k. If the car is running-not a timing belt. How do you know when a timing belt has gone? You don't say what car you have. Some cars have what is known as a none interference engine. I had a 2litre Capri where the cam belt snapped. It did no damage, and only needed the belt replaced. If you have a car which is not none interference, then get it changed now, then keep a record of mileage. Have it changed before recommended time. It can cause massive damage to an engine if it snaps. I did have another car where this happened. It made one hell of a noise, and bent the valves. How do you know when a timing belt has gone? When the timing belt goes the car stops.

It just stops - period.

If you are on the highway, turning a corner, whatever, you will just stop.

We have one car that the timing belt goes like clockwork every 18 months and we can thank God that we it has always been in a safe place.

We now get it replaced every 18 months in advance of an accident. How do you know when a timing belt has gone? The timing belt operates the valve gear, if it breaks the engine will stop abruptly, often with disastrous and horribly expensive consequences. If you've no idea when (or if) yours was changed, I'd have it done now. The costs are nothing compared to what might happen. How do you know when a timing belt has gone?lets see . how will you know when it gone...well you will here loud noises and the car stops then its a right off. you will bend valves and you will need a head re-build, its a pain in the a** and can cost lots of money.. if you think its gonna go get it fixed sooner then later. mine cost me 500 to change, would have cost over 5000 if the belt broke. How do you know when a timing belt has gone?80k on the Fiesta 1.25 Zetec engine but worth doing at 70k or earlier if you think it may be suspect as if it does go it is new engine time as the pistons and valves will kiss each other goodbye. They used to be 100k intervals but for some reason Ford reduced it (probably to play safe). How do you know when a timing belt has gone? The timing belt operates the cams in the valves in the engine. No timing belt, engine doesn't run. Replace it regularly when the car is serviced, it costs very little.
